BerrySocial

Posted in Blog on October 2, 2009 by sagx80

Hey bloggers!  So a new site has launched for blackberry users that I was privileged enough to help beta test.  BerrySocial!  This site was created by RukusBA and ngreenwood6 from Twitter.  It is a greatly growing one stop shop for all you’re social networking needs.  Right now they are focusing on blackberry users from all over the globe but do have aspirations to open to all types of mobile users.

The site is a one of a kind *at least that I have seen*.  Features you’re own customizable profile with the use of widgets, ranging from your GamerTag, music player, Twitter feed, Pictures, Hulu (non Canadian), Google Maps, and many more, and more to come.  You can move the widgets anywhere on your profile untill you get the desired look.  Users are also welcome to create ‘Groups’ for which to join, mingle and expand you’re social circle.  Creators of the groups may choose to have it private to their friends list or open to the public.  Create discussions within the groups and maybe learn something new or meet new and interesting people.  I myself have found a few people through BerrySocial to converse with.  Another cool feature of the site is the integrated chat bar at the bottom, so you can chat in real time with the people on your friends list.  Along with Twitter they have integrated Facebook friends feed as well you can see what you’re BerrySocial friends are updating!

One of the other features is ‘The Wire’  this is like you’re twitter feed with options to reply to other users and if you wish to set the permissions anything you post there will post automatically to your Twitter and Facebook!  A great way to update all you’re sites without having to go to all of them individually!  They are working on getting a mobile application as well so when you are away from your computer you can still be connected.

So we all invite you to come join the BerrySocial crew, everyone’s very friendly and one of the best things I find is the creators are right in there with you, have a question/comment and they will respond to you unlike *cough*facebook/twitter*cough*.  So why are you still reading this GO JOIN! Add some friends, play with the widgets, share some pics, oh and have fun!

Loma’s Pride

Oh Hai bloggers!  Recently I started making theme’s for blackberry’s and found it challenging and fun!  One of the most challenging things i found making theme’s is…What to make a theme of?  So I went in search of some inspiration, scouring the internet and my laptop’s hard drive, then it hit me!  My really good friend is having a bday next week and loves personalized stuff.  So with some help from her girlfriend I got a photo she really likes and then the ball just rolled from there!  Now since she has a Bold like me it was easier to make and test it, so the process went a lot faster than other theme’s I am making.

As this was my first endeavour in making a theme I thought I would share the outcome with you all.  It’s ok to share now because she came over last nite to get her present and loved it!  Sorry bloggers this theme is only for her so no downloading this one…there will be more for you in the next little while, I am almost done my second theme titled ‘Startiger’ so stay tuned!  While your waiting tho I will post some pictures of ‘Lomaspride’ below.  hope you enjoy!

Ubertwitter: Paid vs Freeware

Posted in Blog on August 20, 2009 by sagx80

So today Ubertwitter released their free upgrade to 0.912 that has an AD embedded at the top of your feed, but they have also added in the previously promised paid version, which will not have AD’s in it.  The response time has been improved along with the ability to have multiple accounts/LSB/video support and faster picture uploads, see www.ubertwitter.com for a full list.  All features are available with both the free and the paid versions.

ubertweet

When I seen @Ubertwiter send this tweet out earlier I was actually about to purchase it because I do believe in supporting developers that do an amazing job.  But then I seen that Ubertwitter has decided to not go with the one time purchase route, instead they are offering the AD free Paid version on a yearly subscription basis of 4.99 USD/yr which is not auto renewed.  Now I’m sorry but I am not ok with another subscription to something even if it is once a yr.   I personally will be sticking with the freeware version, unless Ubertwitter Gods decide to change their mind.

What do you think bloggers? Will you pay for a subscription of this popular app or will you make due with the freeware version?

Are ADs being used right?

Posted in Blog with tags on August 12, 2009 by sagx80

So we’ve all seen them embedded in our apps, strategically placed, taking up memory and data. You got it ADs! We all know them and have learned to hate them.
As smartphones like the iPhone and Blackberries become more and more popular, a demand for apps increases. Some developers decided to charge for them and others are just free, and a few have free trials. Wither it be from looking for a hotel to staying socially connected, you will find an app to suit your needs. So users scour the internet and AppWorld for Apps they can download for free and hopefully have ad free.
Users want a app to do more for them/run faster/more features ect. Well developers have found this isn’t cheap. Thus they create updates and start including ads to pay for these features for their free app.

I know ads are essential to earn money for developers but I believe they are being used incorrectly. A lot of developers have the free app with ADs or you can purchase the app and have no ads. Since when did we all start being ok with paying to not see ADs? We pay tons of money a month for a cable/satellite subscriptions but that doesn’t stop commercials from interrupting my shows. Instead you can pay more and have a PVR or Tivo which records your shows so you can just skip the commercials but that’s not all, you get more features!
Why aren’t developers following suit? Instead we have to pay to get rid of the ADs but you don’t get more features. I was all excited this morning when the update of UberTwitter was released.  Only to find that there was this banner AD at the top of my timeline.  Needless to say I am very disappointed.  Now @UberTiter did hint that there will be a paid version, all that was said is the ADs would be removed. This will not cut it for myself and many BB users.  In order for me to purchase an app not only will it have to be ad free but it will have to do more than the free version, ad some value to the app.
I’d like to see a change in the way ADs are being used or have the ability to hide them or put an AD on a page to view when the app starts then it goes away….something!
So again I put it too you, the people. Are you ok with paying hard earned money just to get rid of
Ads or do you want more?  Are the ADs in apps being used correctly?  Tell me what you think.

***This morning UberTwitter sent out a tweet that they have removed the ADs until they have a paid version ready* I still want more features for my money not just no ADs***

What would you do?

Posted in Blog with tags on August 1, 2009 by sagx80

Okay bloggers…dating, we’ve all done it at some point in our lives. Some people do what I call ‘rapid dating’ which is when you date multiple people one right after the other or overlap them in some cases.  Others (like myself) take their time in getting to know one person until it goes sour or evolves into something else.
Now what I like to do within the first couple dates is to let the other person know my likes/dislikes, turn on’s/turn off’s in the personality/attitude sense.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this, it seems to be a standard way of  ‘weeding out’ those you are not compatible with.  Well recently I was ‘dating/getting to know’ someone which ended last night.  Things seemed to be going ok, we hit little speed bumps along the way but I got over it cause I really liked this person.  I won’t name names cause I don’t believe that’s fair to them.
So in the beginning we told each other a lot about our pasts, ex’s, likes/dislikes and so on.  Had a few sleep overs, meet friends, the usual story of two people dating.  Now I have a few things that I will not tolerate as most people do, mine are lies, heavy drugs (ie. E, poppers, coke, basically everything but weed), people who date more than one person at one time and sleep with them all.  So other than those big things I’m pretty easy to get along with.
So last night we went to their buddy’s place to have a few drinks for the buddy’s birthday.  Was fun at first, chilling on the patio in the sun with some beers, talking, listening to music….sounds like a chill time eh.  Then the most disgusting thing happened that made me sick to my stomach….the bday boy started crushing up some coke.  As soon as I seen it I decided it was time for me to go home.  The person I was dating had told me they left that all in the past and I believed them. now I’m not a controlling person, I told the person I was dating I’m not their mother and won’t tell them what to do, but I won’t be around for it.  As I was saying that I needed to go home cause I didn’t want to be around that they decided to shove it up their nose knowing my total disgust with it.  That’s when I stood up and went to leave then the bday boy said he would drive me home as the person I was dating left their bag at my place.  Stupidly I said ok and we left.
When we arrived at my place I handed them their bag and edged them to the door, the whole time the person I was dating apologized and apologized, and even said they will take last night as a life lesson and only do a few more lines.  Really!  They realized after the first line that it was a mistake to do, why do more if you really care about me?  Then came more apologizing but to no avail.,  based on one simple fact.  They knew where I stood on the topic from day one and still choose to do it. When they left I told them goodbye.
I’ve gone over it in my head whether or not to forgive them one last time.  Then I stepped back and thought to myself, how do I forgive and forget this when every time I looked at them I felt nothing but disgust and nausea.  The answer came to me, I can’t.  I cannot forfeit my beliefs and standards just to not be alone in this world, no-one should have to.
So I leave it to you bloggers…what would you have done?  Anything different?  I invite you to take the poll and see where you stand.
